To Believe Or Not To Believe

Let me declare beforehand that I do not purport myself to be some kind of expert on the discussion at hand. It is also NOT my intention to bash nor defame anyone nor any group of individuals. It is, however, my intention to express MY beliefs and views, through my eyes. It may or may not be the truth or reality, it is just what's in MY head.

Truth is different from Absolute Truth, in that, truth is relative to one's life experiences and may deviate from an absolute truth, if any one person even knows what it really is. And I say that because it is quite apparent with all the inter-religious bickering or sporting views or political affiliations, different individuals will consider what they were taught to believe or what they know to be the truth, when in fact it is just 'a truth' and may not be 'the (absolute) truth'. Enough with the quantum theory behind truth.

So my topic today is to believe or not to believe, that is the question. For thirty something years, I was a devout believer and follower in a supreme God. But a couple of years ago, something occurred in my life which drastically altered my views and loyalties. Now I am floating somewhere between agnostic and atheistic views. I find it hard to follow a king that allows his loyal subjects to suffer cruel fates while he/she just sits there and watches, if there is a king at all to begin with.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot to be thankful for and I am. The question is, where is my gratitude supposed to be directed to? In a supreme being or the natural cycle of life? At least the cycle of life is self evident, which is more than I can say for other possibilities. I get a strange feeling in my gut just saying that because I would be ridiculed by so many people close to me if I had expressed these views in a more personal setting.

I know this is a highly controversial topic and I do expect heated views on it, but remember, our experiences shape our views and beliefs. I have no problem with other people's beliefs - Everyone is entitled to their own. What I have a problem with is when someone tries to shove their beliefs down my throat! I appreciate a reciprocation of such respect or at least a highly intelligent and ultra-civil discussion of the topic. I say ultra because some people think they're being civil when in fact they're being blindly and devoutly biased on the issue. I know, I used to be one of them.

I just have to mention this before I close up for now. I don't believe there's anyone who knows the whole and absolute truth about anything this controversial. So I don't think anyone should look down to others on these topics. And I dare say this, if it the absolute truth, then there should be no other side to it. I guess I would extend such types of discussions in other posts as time goes on.

Please feel free to comment. I invite your views, just don't be a total snob about it! Thanks for visiting my blog.
